Lessons from the Amazing World of Dojo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"4437\">Within 22 seconds, I lost my gold medal during my first ever interschool Kumite competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9d3e\">I was thirteen and shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ed3a\">It took me more than a couple of minutes to process the defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"48f4\">However, it didn\u2019t take more than a couple of seconds for my 13-year-old brain to conveniently blame the defeat on my relative inexperience and most importantly, our Sensei who was absent during the entire competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"600d\">As a matter of principle, our Sensei never used to accompany us for any of the tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ef03\">And we always felt very strongly about his choice of not joining us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ebc5\">It used to hurt us seeing \u201cthe master\u201d of our opponents standing right beside them for guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"48d7\">And we used to wonder why a master would not come for a tournament to boost up its students\u2019 morale and guide his pupil in executing the effective counter-strategies against opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2911\">Perhaps, the only moral boosting that we got from our sensei, while we \u2014 the participants \u2014 were leaving for the tournament was his words of wisdom: \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Even if you are lucky to have all the requisite skills, it doesn\u2019t mean the world has an obligation to deliver you a medal on a platter. You need to earn it by executing your skills inside the dojo (the arena where the bouts take place).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9438\">Fortunately, there was a federation rule to record the last sixteen bouts in each weight category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cc24\">Our Sensei used to go through those tapes and then share his insights on bouts with us. But we could never lay our hands on those tapes to self-analyze our performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"abe3\">After the tournament when we were scheduled to meet our Sensei, I was hopeful of receiving some praise from my master for winning a silver medal in my very first tournament. I was proud of my performance except for those 22 seconds in the final, especially when no one had given me even an outside chance to reach the quarterfinals in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9097\">Subsequently, I was fortunate to learn 3 vital Lessons from our Sensei that I am proud to share with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"c85b\">Lesson #1: Resist the urge to overthink<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fd33\">When Sensei was reviewing the tape, I was all pumped up \u2014 too excited to hear some words of appreciation from our revered Sensei. Instead what we got was Sensei&#8217;s words of wisdom. This is what our Sensei had to say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c<em>Do you know the reason why I don&#8217;t allow you to see those tapes?<\/em>\u201d<\/p><p><em>Let me explain.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Some of the greatest athletes in any sport can\u2019t fight the need to overthink.<\/em><\/p><p><em>They study all the tapes, watch the same replays over and over and over, break down every move to analyze and prepare the right response to different situations.<\/em><\/p><p><em>That\u2019s good, but learning how to react to someone else\u2019s action, waiting for the right moment to respond is never the best strategy.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>* What if that moment doesn\u2019t arrive?<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>* What if the opponent does the unexpected and comes up with an unanticipated move?<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>The athlete can become completely determined to recognize something he saw on film, waiting for that specific situation, trying to remember all the right answers.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Instead of playing his own game, he\u2019s playing the other guy\u2019s game. Reacting instead of acting. Overthinking. Overanalyzing.<\/em><\/p><p><em>That\u2019s how you lose the natural ability.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Some know all the moves, but they watch so many tapes that they have no personal perspective of what\u2019s actually happening on the floor.<\/em><\/p><p><em>They can tell you every nuance of what they see on the video, but when a real game gets out of hand, it\u2019s as if they\u2019re playing Xbox without a controller.<\/em><\/p><p><em>No video to rely on, no instincts, no chance for success.<\/em><\/p><p><em>When you become too focused on what\u2019s going on around you, you lose touch with what\u2019s going on deep inside you.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Those are the guys who are perfect in practice but blow it when it counts.<\/em><\/p><p><em>They can\u2019t find the Zone, they\u2019re distracted by their own thought process, and they end up distrusting themselves.<\/em><\/p><p><em>They\u2019re thinking about everything that can go wrong, thinking about what everyone else is doing, thinking instead of executing their best countermoves.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6a9f\">Lesson #2: Know your limitations<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ea75\">The explanation made perfect sense, but I couldn\u2019t resist asking, \u201cHow do we prepare for an opponent who is more skillful\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9135\">Sensei had a half-smile across his face. And mind you, pulling a half-smile on Sensei was quite an achievement in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6c31\">After taking his own sweet time, Sensei unleashed his next pearl of wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The competition is never about your opponent, it\u2019s always about you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"68b1\">And we were like,\u2026sounds good, but what does that even mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"684b\">Sensei explained,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThere is no way you can prepare every possible countermove for your opponent. So the better alternative is to keep practicing your move till you get complete mastery over them. There are four benefits of this \u2014<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>1.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You know your limitations.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>2.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You are not in a hurry to showcase your moves.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>3.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You wait for the opportune moment to display your mastery.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>4.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You force your opponent to play your game.<\/em><\/p><p><em>And mind you, making your opponent fall for your game is half the battle won\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ee74\"><strong>And we were like\u2026Wow. It can\u2019t get simpler than this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"0ed8\">Lesson #3: Be like water<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fc5f\">And Sensei continued,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>As far as your opponent&#8217;s unseen moves are concerned, there is no way you can prepare yourself, but you can teach yourself to be like water.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0e19\"><strong>Now we all were looking at each other\u2026water?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Be like water.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Learn to move around an obstacle \u2014 just like water.<\/em><\/p><p><em>If you observe, no matter how hard you strike the water, you couldn\u2019t hurt it.<\/em><\/p><p><em>The nature of water is to stay low, not to struggle, and to take on the shape of its container. Thus, nothing is weaker than water. Yet despite such weakness, it can bore through rocks \u2014 by sheer persistence.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>Two of the striking nature of water are \u2014<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>1. Formlessness and<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>2. Adaptability<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>Everyone can learn to emulate the true nature of water by practicing the \u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/illumination-curated\/the-subtle-but-practical-art-of-meaningful-detachment-d353af6d96ff\"><strong><em>art of detachment<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>,\u201d which involves emptying your mind and relaxing.<\/em><\/p><p><em>The reason people know this but don\u2019t put this into practice because they love strength and hate weakness.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Yet it makes more sense to be like water, love weakness rather than strength, and be soft and yielding rather than brutal.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Once you\u2019re inside the dojo \u2014 Be very clear about the objective of your fight \u2014 You are not there to crush your opponent; you are creating an opportunity to score points.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>That\u2019s it.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>And while doing this, you should respect your opponent\u2019s skill because respect can never be a weakness.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"15d2\">I was too young to appreciate everything that was shared by my Sensei. However, with time, I could appreciate those insights more, especially when later in my life, I had to come up with my own written&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/betterhumans.pub\/why-is-it-important-to-have-a-life-philosophy-d8e420c02177\">philosophy of life<\/a>. Not an elaborate essay; just three or four pointers to keep reminding myself about how I ought to have a more mindful experience during the journey of my life.
